John Mearsheimer, an author, political scientist and international relations scholar, gave a lecture in 2015, The Causes and Consequences of the Ukraine Crisis, that has garnered over 11 million views on Youtube, and it is relevant today. He stated that Ukraine is divided and is fighting a civil war between the Ukrainian-speaking people in the northwestern part of the country and the Russian-speaking people of the southeastern part of the nation. The civil war is independent of the struggle between the US and Russia.
One thing we will note is that this follows the Communist playbook. That tactic is to divide a land based on ethnicity, leading the people to see that as their dominant trait, and to see themselves as "oppressed", thereby leading them to revolution.
