Of Light And Life
October has just begun, a month in which it is customary these days to delight in the things of darkness and death, to surround ourselves with images of the scary and violent, of blood and gore, zombies and skeletons. I refer to this, collectively, as the Cult of Death. It has found its way into mainstream culture, and nowadays permeates our movies, music, language and clothing, year-round.
As Christians, on the other hand, we have the admonition of Paul, put forth in Philippians 4:8, and paraphrased by Joseph Smith in the 13th Article of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
"We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."
Satan is the god of death and darkness, but we worship a god of LIGHT and LIFE!
For this reason, many today have begun to reject traditional Halloween festivities, and to look for other alternatives.
To this end, we are hosting a Festival of Light on October 28th, from 6:30-8 pm at the Rexburg Senior Center, located at 40 S. 2nd W. in Rexburg.
And YOU are invited!
This will be a humble affair, but we encourage all in attendance to bring something to share:
First, it will be a potluck! So, bring a food item!
Second, bring a poem to share, and/or a musical act. Remember that the theme is LIGHT.
We encourage you to wear white or light-colored clothing.
Feel free to invite others.
