Toward Zero Deaths!
Rod Klingler | 2020-10-16
There is a nationwide initiative, the website of which declares:
"Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) is a national strategy on highway safety to advocate for eliminating serious injuries and deaths on our nation’s roadways, conceptualized by safety practitioners, researchers, advocates, and others from a variety of disciplines. The strategy calls for all stakeholders to champion the idea that one death on our nation’s roadways is too many, and we must all work together to bring the annual number of roadway deaths down to zero… Toward Zero Deaths is the highway safety vision for the United States. It is the only acceptable target."
This is ridiculous.
All across Idaho you may notice the signs along the highway that say "Toward Zero Deaths." They are supposedly promoting things like seatbelt use, but they represent a principle that should be seriously questioned, which is that we can eliminate all negative outcomes by removing people's ability to choose for themselves. This, of course, is the only way we could ever have "zero deaths" on our highways.
It is also the only way we could ever have "zero deaths" from coronavirus.
And, if you haven't noticed, when some of us choose to accept risk, the opposition kicks into high gear, attempting to batter us into submission with threats, mandates, throwing us out of stores, and claiming that we will somehow kill them or their grandma.
Benjamin Franklin once remarked that "Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety," and he was right! God did not make you free so that you could allow others to control you, and he did not make you unable to resist a virus!
We must choose risk, so that we may preserve freedom. And we must trust God, rather than man, to heal us.
